Are Vitamin Supplements Needed for a Healthy Body?
Vitamin supplements have become a part of our daily meal plan. Adults in the USA and UK invest a lot of money each year to buy vitamin supplements, according to the Food Standards Agency. While the popular supplements are multivitamins and cod liver oil, the mega doses of vitamins and minerals are also growing fast in popularity.
Underrated by all the warnings that predict the possible damage to the body, vitamin supplements have become a mandatory accompaniment at our breakfast table for years now.
Vitamin Supplements as the Shortcut to Good Health
First of all, there is no short cut to good health!
Coming back to the point, the dispute over whether or not a healthy body requires vitamin supplements have still not found a satisfactory answer.
Vitamins are the tiny group of essential substances that promote overall development and growth of the human body. Most vitamins are not produced by the body; we derive vitamins from our balanced diet.
However, as the modern diet has also been an issue of debate, considering the trend of fast foods and fad foods, there has been a deficiency in vitamin intake. Therefore, a pill seems to be the only handy choice, when you have no time to eat nutritious meals. You need not bother keeping an eye on what you are eating; just gulp down a pill and you are sorted!
There is yet another group of people that takes vitamin supplements as a prevailing advice to good health. It is as good as having an effective insurance policy!
Doctors recommend vitamins, thinking that it is a great way to make their patients feel that they are taking medications to stay healthy. Vitamins can protect against free radical damage, prevent certain types of cancers and heart diseases, and ensures excellent health.
However, the truth is that vitamin supplements fail to supply the same amount of nutrients as vitamins in foods do.
When Vitamin Supplements are needed?
Vitamin supplements are needed for the body, but only at certain stages in life. There’s no point in supplying the body with medications unnecessarily.
Vitamin supplements are needed when:
- A woman intends to become pregnant or is pregnant and would require daily vitamin supplements, which mainly includes folic acid that helps in preventing spina bifida.
- Lack of vitamin D requires supplementation. Women, who are covered in their black robes, having limited exposure to heat and sunlight, are deficient in vitamin D. They need vitamin supplements.
- Vitamin supplements are also needed for vegans who do not eat dairy products or meat. They require vitamin B and B12 supplements for improved health.
- Malnourished people, including adults and children require vitamins in the form of pills. Slimmer, people on weight loss diet and the ones who cannot eat or swallow food for medical reasons need supplements.
People who work out and perform intense straining, athletes and gymnasts require vitamin supplements.
Probable Risks
Vitamin supplements should be taken in mild doses, as they are likely to have some toxic effects on the body. Our body needs vitamins, but in limited amounts.
Fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin A, if taken more than required can reach its toxic levels to cause severe liver problems and damage.
